Last Breath Review & Analysis
Amount Of Times Watched (in theaters): 4

Similarly to movies such as Gladiator 2 and We Live In Time I put my faith in this movie early so much so that I even put my name down for the poster at work before it even came out because I was certain that this was going to be a good one. It was easy putting faith in this movie especially considering the fact it had actors I was quite familiar with and had loved their previous work whether it was Woody Harrelson who I thoroughly enjoyed in The Hunger Games franchise, Finn Cole who did wonderful work in the Netflix series Peaky Blinders and Simu Liu who played the iconic Ken character in Barbie. Thrillers have always been my personal favorite genre of film. I love a movie that will keep me on the edge of my seat as well as one that will throw me for a loop and this movie did just that.
Last Breath is about saturation divers Chris Lemons, Duncan Allcock, and David Yuasa who go on a month long journey to the bottom of the North Sea to fix part of the pipeline that was damaged. The site at which the part of the pipe resided was right in the middle of a storm and while Chris and David were fixing it there was a problem with boat so it started to drift out of control which then caused the divers to be tugged along with it. Chris' cord got wrapped around the manifold causing it to snap leaving him stranded with only ten minutes of backup air left while the crew on the ship were using any tactic they could to make it back to the dive site to retrieve him before time ran out.
I have seen this movie four times now and I have gone with a couple different people to watch it and after coming out I have asked them their opinions on it and some of them have said that their opinion of this movie was dampened due to the fact the ending was “predictable”. In my personal opinion a good thriller isn’t always about how predictable certain elements are but rather how well the story does at combining those elements into a story and portraying them on screen while also leaving room for you to be able to feel each of those components as you watch them carry out. Whenever I watch a movie, especially a thriller, I get rid of everything I think I know about the topic or the genre and just watch with an open and almost empty mind. This has helped me to still be able to find that thrill even for a movie that is considered "predictable". When it came to this movie, I felt that some of its elements were so unpredictable, one could call them impossible.
I related the overall concept of this movie to that of another that came out recently, one that was nominated for an Oscar for best original screenplay. September 5, similarly to this movie, is a true story about quick thinking and bravery all while racing against time to beat certain death. The acting was stunning on all fronts and the score kept me on my toes and added to the feeling of suspense and adrenaline while watching this film. There were also some notable captivating shots and I was very intrigued to find out after watching behind the scenes content that while it was not at the bottom of the North Sea the majority of this movie was actually filmed underwater. Peaky Blinders was most definitely a notable role for Finn Cole but I feel we can add this one to the list seeing as he captured the suspense, the emotion, the wit, the bravery, and the passion all perfectly. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this. It has become one of my favorite theater experiences and I feel watching it on the big screen is the only correct way to watch this movie. I applaud this cast for making me go through the five stages of grief, all within a matter of 30 minutes.
Last Breath is a story not only about bravery but about passion and the love for what you do and the fight for what you love, or even who you love. This is a story about refusing to give up even when the odds seem impossible because survival takes a team especially in situations like this. It is an inspiring and thrilling story that teaches its audience to never lose hope and to never shy away from motivation as well as determination because that is what means to survive and overcome impossible odds.
