Silence Is Just As Important As Music Is In Movies

The first time I ever really thought about silence as a part of films is when I was watching Dune Part 2, during the scene towards the very end of the movie where Paul Atreides and Feyd Rautha are fighting one another. There is no music or anything just the sound of silence along with other noises that are made due to the actions occurring in the scene. I thought to myself "why create silence when it seems like there is the perfect opportunity to put music?" Something I neglected to consider is how much of an impact silence makes on the audience compared to a really good song. While a score undoubtedly has an impact on the audience, I feel silence has a different kind of impact.
Silence during a scene really gives the audience a feel of how intense and how deep something is. In the movie A Real Pain, another movie I watched recently, there was a part in the movie where the tour group visited a concentration camp and during that collection of scenes, it was silent, no music not really much talking or anything. Instances like that especially make use of silence because of the the emotional impact it had on so many in a multitude of different ways. Silence can do a lot for a movie, sometimes what a score cannot, especially if they are attempting to stress the importance of emotional aspect of something. I believe they want the audience to consider and think about what is being presented and they can better do that with no background distractions. They want their audiences to focus and it is best done with a quiet mind. Another film that utilized silence was Anora. At the end of the movie as the credits were rolling there was no music only silence. I feel that was a perfect placement and use of silence especially after watching the movie because it was one of those films that made you contemplate deeply and shine a new light on certain issues.
The use of silence can do and make you feel a vast number of things, depending on placement, but I feel it is very important that it's utilized greatly in areas of film where directors or producers want their audiences to focus, think about, and be impacted deeply by the scene accompanying that silence. Silence often speaks louder than words and has the ability to express more thoughts and feelings than a song or dialogue ever can.
