Why Do We Enjoy Watching Movies That Make Us Cry?
Written By: Ella Collins
I was on my way to watch The Wild Robot (for the seventh time) and as I was driving I was listening to the soundtrack, as one does to hype themselves up for the movie. As I was listening to my favorites off the soundtrack i started tearing up, ruining the makeup I was proud of that day, remembering the scenes that accompany each of these songs. Not only is the music from this movie the most gorgeous thing I have ever listened to but this movie in general is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever watched. As I was wiping the tears that were streaming down my face I started thinking to myself "why do we enjoy watching movies that make us cry?" Even if it is a happy cry it still makes you wonder why people enjoy watching these movies, looking at this piece of art that fills us with such intense emotion.
While I believe there is no "correct answer" or "correct way" of considering this I did want to at least express my thoughts on this topic since this is not the first time I have thought about this. As I said, there is no correct response to this question everyone will have different answers and reasonings but in my opinion it is good to feel, especially so deeply, that's what we as humans were put on this Earth to do. I want something that will open up my heart and give me a sense of vulnerability that I can't have many other places. I want it to speak to me in ways other things or other people are unable to and release emotions that I would otherwise keep bottled up. Being able to feel, whether that is joy; sadness; love; or all of the above, is one of the greatest gifts ever given to humans. Allowing yourself to be vulnerable is a very difficult thing especially if it has not turned out well for you in the past but I feel that is one amazing thing about cinema is that you can see the screen but the screen cant see you, at least externally.
A movie has the power to see inside of you and see parts of you that you have closed off or hidden, even from yourself for a long time. You can finally open up that part of you without any judgement. Whether it is the story, the music, or the characters you feel a piece of you is with that and that is good. The art of connection is something I have always tied to movies. Everyone always has a deep connection to something or someone in their life. Something that keeps them going. For me that is film. Watching a movie even if its a not so good one provides me with a different perspective on life and who I am as a person. It has shaped me. People will have a "comfort show" or a "comfort movie" because to them that is safe and sometimes even those could be ones that make you cry from joy or heartbreak. Nonetheless you feel safe enough to feel those emotions because you are allowed to feel without judgement. What is life without feeling and expression. We as humans were put on this Earth to love, to the people around us, to love the things around us, to the love the beauty around us. The gift of feeling is one of the greatest gifts ever given to humans. Watching movies that make me feel something is what keeps me alive inside and keeps me motivated I want to be able to express what I am unable to on my own in life. I want to become that person I allow myself to be in a theater in hopes it will carry on into my everyday life. Art such as movies among many other forms were not just created to be something pretty to look at, it was created for us to think and to feel and to live in. I feel we as human beings watch movies that make us cry because it all connects us to a deeper more expressive part of us that we feel cannot fully come out any other time.
